Below is some information to fill in the gaps when I wasn’t 100% sure of what I was saying. Interesting history!
During World War II, many soldiers from the Irish Army deserted their posts and joined the British forces to fight against the Axis powers. The official policy of Ireland during this period was one of neutrality, and the government under Éamon de Valera was committed to maintaining this stance throughout the war. This neutrality was a fundamental part of Ireland's foreign policy, reflecting its desire to assert its sovereignty and independence following the recent end of British rule.
When Irish soldiers deserted to join the British Army, they were seen as violating this policy of neutrality. Their action was also viewed as a breach of their military oath and duties to the Irish Defence Forces. In response, the Irish government took a stern approach to discourage such actions and maintain control over its military.
In 1945, the Irish government enacted the Emergency Powers (No. 362) Order, commonly known as the "Starvation Order." This legislation targeted the deserters by barring them from a wide range of employment for a period of seven years. The law aimed to punish the deserters and deter others from leaving their posts to join foreign militaries, particularly in a time when neutrality was a cornerstone of national policy. The ban was part of a broader context of Ireland's complex relationship with both the UK and its own recent history of gaining independence.
